Ultrasound Q & A

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a painless imaging test Dr. Stebbing uses to take a look at the structures just beneath the skin. Ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves that bounce off of the structures in your body.
These sound waves are then fed into a computer that generates images of your muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves, and other soft tissue.

To perform your ultrasound, Dr. Stebbing uses a small probe called a transducer. After applying a gel to the skin, Dr. Stebbing guides the probe over areas of your body. The transducer sends out inaudible sound waves and then collects the waves that bounce back.

These sound waves are displayed on a monitor in real-time, allowing Dr. Stebbing to examine the structure of your soft tissue and movement to a joint occurs. Ultrasound evaluation includes imaging your blood vessels and nerves.

What conditions can ultrasounds identify?

Dr. Jennifer Stebbing DO Musculoskeletal & Sports Medicine uses ultrasounds to diagnose a number of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Torn or injured tendons and ligaments, such as tennis elbow
  • Muscle tears
  • Sprains of the back, ankle, knee, hip
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Joint arthritis
  • Rotator Cuff injuries

Ultrasounds are essential to diagnosing musculoskeletal injuries. Unlike MRIs, X-rays, and other imaging tests, ultrasound can demonstrate abnormal movement of your musculoskeletal structures, helping to pinpoint the exact cause of your pain.

How is ultrasound used in treatment?

In addition to assisting with diagnoses, ultrasound is used to guide treatment for musculoskeletal injuries, including arthritis.

Dr. Stebbing uses ultrasounds during all treatments, including:

  • Prolotherapy
  • Trigger point injections
  • Bone Marrow Concentrate Injections
  • Nerve hydrodissection
  • Platelet-rich plasma injections

The ultrasound images help Dr. Stebbing precisely place whatever is injected exactly where it is intended.

Dr. Stebbing, founder of Musculoskeletal & Sports Medicine, uses ultrasound to offer effective, personalize treatment for a number of musculoskeletal conditions. If you experience persistent pain and dysfunction, Dr Stebbing can help you determine the underlying cause of your condition and the best treatment for effective relief.
